These squares are popular in the Quebec Mauricie region. They are similar to date squares prepared with oatmeal but have a moister texture.

Set the oven rack in the lower third of the oven. Preheat the oven at 375 °F (190°C).
Oat mixture: blend butter and brown sugar. In a bowl, mix oats, flour and baking soda and mix in the butter-sugar mixture with your hands or a pastry blender.
With a food processor: mix oat, flour, baking soda and brown sugar. Add the butter in pieces and process a few seconds until homogenous.
Pour half of the mixture in a 8 po x 8 po ( 20cm x 20 cm) sqare pan and press with the palm of your hand. Cover with the apple and sprinkle with the sugar and dices of butter.
Cover the apples with remaining oat mixture and bake in the oven for about 40 Minutes until lightly golden on the edge. Cool completely before cutting.
