 1 cup (190 g) chopped dates
 1 1/4 cup (310 ml) boiling water
 2/3 cup (125 g) vegetable shortening
 1 cup (200 g) sugar
 4 squares (56 g) unsweetened chocolate
 2 eggs beaten
 1 1/2 cup (170 g) cake and pastry flour
 1/2 tsp (2 ml) baking soda
 1/2 tsp (2 ml) salt
 1 tsp (5 ml) pure vanilla extract
 1 cup (163 g) chocolate chips
 1 cup (120 g) pecans

Place the dates in a medium bowl and pour boiling water over them.

Melt the chocolate over low heat in a double boiler or in the microwave at 50% power and reserve.
